The bright light and color of the islands of Oceania is conveyed by generalized areas of resonant, sharp colors. The large tree at the foot of the mountain becomes the central component in this landscape and is also to be found in other works by the artist. With time this mountain became part of Gauguin's system of spiritual and symbolic images, linked with the Tahitian goddess of the Moon. (1892)

Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) was a French post-Impressionist artist. His use of bold colors, exaggerated body proportions and stark contrasts in his paintings set him apart from his contemporaries. Gauguin often sought exotic environments, and spent time living and painting in Tahiti.
